The Facade of Success
“Success” wasn't protecting me—it was consuming me from the inside out.
At 30, I had what many considered the perfect life. As one of the youngest corporate managers in my industry, I led the West Coast branch of a major corporation in Los Angeles, overseeing international operations. The perks were endless—company cars, corporate jets, exclusive meetings, and events across the country. From the outside, everything appeared perfect, and I was deemed what many would call “highly successful.”
But beneath this gleaming exterior lay a devastating truth that was becoming impossible to ignore. The more I succeeded outwardly, the more I felt an overwhelming need to escape. My apparent success wasn’t just hiding my struggles—it was intensifying them.

The Hidden Battle
While climbing the corporate ladder, I was silently descending into the depths of addiction, emotional overwhelm, and despair. Not a single day passed when I was truly sober. My life became a delicate balancing act, desperately trying to maintain the illusion of control while internally battling demons that grew stronger each day. My relationships with family grew increasingly distant as they watched helplessly while I spiraled downward. A five-year relationship turned toxic and codependent, breaking down before my eyes, yet I felt utterly powerless to leave or change it. My health deteriorated significantly—a diagnosis of Hashimoto’s disease, coupled with serious digestive issues, anxiety, and depression, served as constant reminders of the toll this double life was taking.
The Turning Point
Everything changed after what should have been a routine client meeting about a big potential project. On the surface, everything seemed fine, but afterward, standing alone in the bathroom, I was hit by an overwhelming wave of hopelessness and anxiety. I couldn’t even look at myself in the mirror with any semblance of respect or recognition. My soul was screaming inside, “Who are you? What are you doing with your life?” The substances that had once numbed these feelings could no longer silence the crying voice within. I had reached a point of pitiful and incomprehensible demoralization. The carefully constructed facade had finally shared. In that moment of clarity, I recognized that I couldn’t continue living this way. It wasn’t just about me anymore—it was about the future I wanted to reclaim as a man. After confronting the undeniable truth my soul had been crying out, I made a choice that would transform not only my life but the lives of countless others: I admitted defeat, reached out for help, and walked back into the rooms of AA for the second Ume.

The Journey Home
Recovery became more than freedom from addiction—it became a journey of rediscovering myself. Through the principles of 12-step recovery, spiritual growth, and intuitive healing, I didn’t just recover; I transformed. My body healed. My spirit awakened. And most importantly, I discovered my true calling.
This journey led me to love—both for myself and for my future family. I met my beloved, embraced the role of stepfather, and later welcomed our son into the world. Each step reinforced what I now know to be my purpose.
